Available for download, iZotope Stutter Edit 2 is a creative mixing and sound design tool that can perform everything from glitchy and staccato sound manipulations to esoteric phase distortion effects and more.

Use this tool to create electronic music, create strange sonic tapestries for visual media, or process individual elements of a mix in idiosyncratic ways. With a MIDI mode that allows you to play presets with your compatible MIDI controller, Stutter Edit 2 can also be played in a similar way to a virtual instrument.

Despite being full of complicated effects, the graphical user interface (GUI) is relatively simple to understand. At the top of the window are global effects, where you can implement all the glitchy and stuttering effects that the original Stutter Edit was famous for, and much more. Below these processors is a list of other individualized effects, such as Phaser, Flanger, Delay, Reverb, and other processing options. Effects can be reordered into virtually any desired configuration, and by selecting each effect, a parameter window can be changed.

The fun starts here: Corresponding to each parameter is a Curve Editor, which allows you to draw and program the exact timing of a parameter as it progresses or cycles between its minimum and maximum values. Create phasers that modulate more quickly over time, distortions that become less crunchy as the effect continues. Almost all of the plugin's parameters can be manipulated with the Curve Editor.

This is a colossal plugin to understand for sure. But to get started, iZotope has included a variety of banks of presets and gestures. Some of them were designed by famous music producer BT.

This plugin is compatible with Mac and Windows platforms. It will work on AU, VST2, VST3 and AAX platforms.

Auto Mode and MIDI Configuration

Stutter Edit 2 is a playable effect. It must be triggered to do anything to your audio. You can trigger gestures instantly with the new Auto mode, which lets you trigger your gestures with a single button. You can also use a MIDI keyboard to tell Stutter Edit 2 when to trigger, allowing you to play your effects like an instrument. Auto mode is great for quickly listening to gestures or when you need instant gratification in your mix. Using MIDI mode allows you to control Stutter Edit 2 with a MIDI keyboard. Setup is easy, with a built-in help screen that detects your DAW and provides step-by-step instructions.

Gestures and Banks

Stutter Edit 2 includes hundreds of new Gestures (presets) designed by BT and iZotope. When a gesture is triggered, you can transform your audio into a short rhythmic idea or an evolving soundscape. Gestures are organized into Banks, which are automatically mapped to your MIDI keyboard, so you can trigger different gestures whenever you want. Before diving into Stutter Edit 2's controls, be sure to explore the different Gestures. Even the most basic Banks can completely change your audio.

Stutter and Buffer Effects

At the heart of Stutter Edit 2 are the Stutter and Buffer controls, which let you mix melody, rhythm, and sound. Stutter Edit 2 cuts or buffers your audio into razor-sharp slices and plays them back at different speeds. Set a slower stutter for funkier grooves or create edits so fast they turn into pitch. Set a Range and make edits speed up, slow down, or both at the same time. The Stutter control defines how many slices of your audio will play with the gesture and how quickly they play. The Buffer control determines which sections of your audio Stutter Edit 2 stores and plays. Advanced customization options let you control Rate, Quantization, and more to keep your edits in sync with your session.

Time-Varying Modifiers

Set a Range for any effect in Stutter Edit 2 so it morphs and changes in time with your gesture. Time Variant Modifiers can be added to any parameter to control how and where within range the effect will be reproduced. Customize these modifiers with the Curve Editor to create idiosyncratic moving effects. Not sure which curve to use? Just choose one of the 12 pre-made curves and start experimenting.

New Effects compared to Version 1

New to Stutter Edit are output limiter, distortion, chorus, reverb, combo filter, flanger, phaser, delay, reverb, and tape stop effects. The lo-fi processors have also been significantly improved, providing impressive bitcrushing and undersampling effects, essential for creating the famous glitch sound.
